So you want to start a career in modelling?

Things for you to consider. To be a model you not only have to have great looks and a good figure. You need drive and determination for all those early starts and long days. So what would be my advice as a professional photographer? Firstly seek direction from people in the industry – preferably speak to a couple of models and ask them what the highs and lows are. The Fashion business can be hard but very rewarding for those that succeed. You will need to be confident in yourself have excellent grooming skills be good with makeup and have some fashion sense.
I would always advise reading fashion magazines as this will give you some idea of the types of poses you will be expected to learn.
So how would I treat an aspiring model? Firstly before you ever point a camera in their direction, arrange a meeting and this meeting must be chaperoned whether the model is 16 or 60. This protects the client and the photographer. I always insist that the model is chaperoned especially between the age of 16 through 18 and this must be a legal guardian or someone appointed by same.
As a photographer you are expected to belong to professional organisations such as the SWPP –Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers – this should give you, the client, some assurance that you are dealing with a professional. Equally you should ask your photographer whether he is insured this protects the photographer, the model and the general public.
You will need to join a model agency – but care here is required – shop around and again seek advice before committing your hard earned. Model portfolios can be expensive so considering contacting your local camera club or photographer who may consider offering a model for prints option before building you a professional portfolio.
I cannot stress the importance of always taking someone with you until you have established yourself professionally. My final advice is if you want something – go for it!

A testimonial from a recent model - Rahanna -
"I would like to say a big thanks to George for his help creating a portfolio. He is very professional and I really enjoyed working with him. He made me feel very relaxed and safe in the way he set everything up also encouraging me to bring someone with me. I was nervous to start but that soon went as he helped me with the poses and props. I would encourage anyone to get the George Experience, he's a great photographer and makes the whole experience a joy. I know I will continue to work with him and hope others will. Thanks again George. Rahanna x"
